Creek Watch offers a new focus on science literacy, environmental stewardship and research for students at all levels in all subjects. In arid Colorado, water is a limiting resource.  Cities on the Western Slope of our state pump and pipe water thousands of miles to quench Front Range thirsts.  Waste water is processed and flows downstream to the Great Plains to irrigate the crops that we then consume as tacos, pizza, pasta, and bread.  Yet a new common question is “Just how good is our water for our health?”

Lessons include

Aquatic Ecosystems, Bioaccumulation,
& Geography Skits
Enviroscape Watershed Model
Macroinvertebrate Survey
Turbidity Labs
Dissolved Oxygen & Temperature Labs
pH Labs
Project Steering

Through the Creek Watch program, students are engaged in real research by studying a body of water near their school with.  By experiencing water research across all subject areas and disciplines, and using a local and accessible natural resource students strengthen quantitative skills and understand the connection and impacts that they have to their waterways.

The Student Research Symposium at Colorado College typically occurs on a Saturday in April, near Earth Day. Students present their projects before judges, meet college students, enjoy campus tours, and special guest speakers and activities. This is a truly amazing way to open up college as a possibility for your student’s future.
