Student Spotlight:Jamie

Jamie is a fifth-grade student at the Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning.  I sat down with him this week before our YES Club to ask him some questions about the outdoors, YES Club, and his Green Team.

How long have you been in YES Club?  What grade you in?

I am in Division Four at Academy ACL (5th Grade) and has been in YES Club for two years now!

What’s your favorite part about being a member of the club?

“If you’re interested in one subject and school doesn’t teach it well, you can join YES club and to go more in depth.”  When asked what some of those subjects were, Jamie told me that water ecosystems was a topic that initially got him very excited about YES Club, including different lessons on fish.

Could you tell me a little more about this Green Team adventure you’ve been on?  What is it?  Why did you start it?

“Actually, I’ve got good news!  We’re going to have a whole-staff presentation on the Green Team soon.”

“Many other schools are more environmentally conscious and our former Green Team got canceled, so we really need to re-start one here at AACL.  One of our goals is to try to set standards and regulations on how our school treats waste.”

What’s your favorite thing to do outside?

“Go fishing!  Catch and release of course.”

What’s your spirit animal and why?

“According to the ancient Babylonians, it’s a trout.”

Do you have any idea what you want to be when you “grow up”?

“Not yet, I’m still deciding.”  When I asked Jamie about some of his passions, he mentioned rockets, space, and the environment.

What does the word “stewardship” mean to you?

“Someone who is a steward to something means they really care about it and would do something out of the ordinary for it.”  When asked what he’s a steward for, he responded with “probably the environment.”

I can most definitely say Jamie is a steward of the environment and I’m so happy that we get to spend time together in YES Club.  I try my best to teach Jamie new things each week, but often times end up learning a lot from him as well. – Austin
